HYER GOODS is a handbag and leather goods company designed by Dana Cohen and made in Brooklyn, NY. Having worked in corporate fashion, Dana saw wasteful practices and decided to create a brand that would upcycle unused materials. Using this method, massive energy footprints needed to cultivate land, livestock, crops and fertilizers are saved, while simultaneously reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfills. Less energy and less pollution mean fewer greenhouse gasses.
Every year, 6.3 million tons of textiles are wasted during the design and production process. Leather is a natural product, full of defects, off grain, stretch/growth/injury marks, 12-15% can be wasted during the production and manufacturing process. For one single medium size tannery, for example, that could mean 20,000 square feet of deadstock leather every month! HYER GOODS upcycles those materials and makes beautiful new items that can be worn for years with unmatched quality. The larger HYER GOODS items are cut from deadstock (abandoned) materials and smaller items like wallets or card holders are made from cutting scraps.
The designs are meant to be loved and enjoyed for a long time, but know that if the leather purchase ever makes its way to a landfill, the material will degrade in a reasonable amount of time, so as to not be a burden to future generations.
